PACE Study May as Well Say Cancer All in Your Mind

Published: July 22, 2012

By now, many of you have heard news reports about the PACE study out of the UK, suggesting that cognitive behavioral therapy and exercise are helpful for chronic fatigue syndrome, and misguided and misinformed media reports suggesting that this shows that the illness is all in people's minds. Understandably infuriating - and about on par scientifically as news reports about space aliens making Lindsay Lohan pregnant!

Pacing Yourself in CFS and Fibromyalgia

This is another study done by my favorite epidemiologist in the world, Dr. Leonard Jason. This study shows that if people with CFS/fibromyalgia pace themselves instead of overdoing it, they have better overall function and quality of life, and less depression, anxiety, fatigue, pain, and disability. For those of you who are "Mega Type A overachievers," the study shows that pushing to exhaustion is counterproductive. You will often get more done by pacing yourself and doing less. The key is to listen to your body. It will tell you what level of activity feels right.

Minalcipran for Fibromyalgia Pain

The FDA has recently (and for the first time) begun to approve medications for addressing fibromyalgia pain. In the last year, the FDA has approved Lyrica, Cymbalta, and now Minalcipran. Although these medications can be helpful, and you will hear about them (each company will spend ~ $70 million/year advertising them), it is critical to remember that the key to pain relief is to use the "SHINE Protocol" to eliminate the underlying causes of the pain.

A new study from University of Utah and Emory University showed that Merck's Isentress fights the XMRV virus - the virus linked to both prostate cancer and chronic fatigue syndrome. Though much too early to recommend it as a CFS therapy, it is one of many parts of the XMRV/CFS issue that holds promise.

Low Power Lasers May Help Fibromyalgia Pain

Published: July 21, 2012

When muscles do not have enough energy, they get stuck in the shortened position and hurt. In addition, people then get painful knots (called trigger points) in the middle of the muscles, where they bunch up. Many therapies can help release these painful trigger points. Our SHINE Protocol does so by restoring energy production in the muscles. Acupuncture also helps, and 70% of acupuncture points are also muscle trigger points. I suspect putting the needle in (which we know releases trigger points) stimulates a current that helps (though often temporarily) restore energy in the muscle so it can release. Very low current electrical stimulation has also been shown to help. This study shows that even a low power laser directed to the area can ease pain.

Hypnosis Helps Decrease Fibromyalgia Pain

Is your doctor "putting a curse on you?" Odd as this may sound, this is what is occurring in much of how physicians approach their patients. Let's look at the power of words in the healing process, using fibromyalgia pain and hypnosis as examples. We have progressed to the point where we can actually see the areas associated with fibromyalgia pain light up on brain scans. As an aside, there are not many idiots who still believe that the pain is not real, but the brain scan changes should help those few recover from being fools.
