Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) - A Common Cause of CFS & Fibromyalgia

Published: September 9, 2012

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is a common trigger for CFS and Fibromyalgia (CFS/FMS). Sleep Apnea is fairly well known. We are now learning about a different form of SDB called Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). UARS almost exactly mimics CFS/FMS, is very addressable, and can be picked up on special testing. If you snore at night, you may have UARS or sleep apnea. Tape yourself one night to see if you snore. (Don't count on your husband to tell you. Most of us have a better sense of survival than that!)

In this study, the scientific research was reviewed to find all of the "gold-standard" placebo controlled studies (in English) testing whether fish oil is helpful in addressing depression. Ten studies were found, and pooling the results from all of the studies (called a Meta-analysis) showed that fish oil was significantly more effective than placebo in addressing depression. This was also the case for Bipolar depression as well as regular depression.

Testosterone, DHEA, and Pain

Optimizing hormonal levels can help pain in many ways. Correcting thyroid deficiency, despite normal blood tests, can markedly decrease pain. This is also the case for low adrenal function when adrenal support with the prescription cortef, or natural support (e.g. Adrenal Stress End) is given. Research by Professor Hillary White showed that prescribing natural testosterone to women who have Fibromyalgia can decrease pain. Now a recent animal study suggests that both testosterone and DHEA, another adrenal hormone that is converted to testosterone, may decrease neuropathic pain when taken on a regular basis. One caution though. DHEA could briefly increase pain for the first several hours before blocking it long term (see below). In general, it is a good idea to keep hormone levels, including DHEA and Testosterone, optimized in patients with Fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions.

Both Swimnastics and Walking Reduce Knee Pain and Increase Knee Function in Those with Knee Arthritis

In some sufferers, knee and/or hip arthritis is so severe that it hurts to walk—even though walking would help decrease the pain in the long term. This study showed that walking in a pool (and many communities with a local pool, fitness club or YWCA that offers low cost swimnastic programs) was even more effective at reducing pain than regular walking. So this offers a way to get well even if you are in too much pain to walk.

Stressed Moms Carry Babies on the Right

A new British study suggests that mothers who cradle their baby on their right side may be struggling with extreme stress. Previous research has shown that the majority of mothers prefer to cradle their baby on their left side, even if they aren't left-handed. Durham University researchers asked 79 new mothers to pick up their babies and cradle them in their arm. They also completed a survey on their mental state. The findings demonstrated that 86 percent of mothers who exhibited no signs of stress or depression in the survey preferred to hold their babies to the left, while 32 percent of mothers showing signs of elevated stress held their babies on their right arm.

Soy Slashes Sperm Count

Published: September 7, 2012

Men who eat just half a serving of soya foods (e.g. miso, tofu and tempeh) a day may have drastically fewer sperm than those who do not consume such foods. Harvard researchers asked 100 couples seeking therapy for infertility about their intake of 15 soy-based foods over the preceding three months. An analysis of the data revealed that those men who consumed soy daily had sperm counts averaging 65 million sperm per milliliter, 40% less than the normal sperm count of 80 to 120 million sperm per mL. Men with counts lower than 20 million sperm per mL are generally considered infertile.
